— The man in black.

— I was at a funeral. A man up the road.

— I’m sick o’ funerals.

— Same here. But this one – it was a bit different. He was from Mayo or somethin’– somewhere over there. So it was a real country funeral. The coffin in the house.

— With your man in it?

— Yeah, yeah. He was a big man now. Hands like shovels, yeh know. He looked great, but – in the coffin. Like he was just pretendin’ to be dead an’ he was listenin’ to the chat. Squashed into it, he was. A huge man. Larger than life. Reminded me of my own da. A bit.

— They gave him a good send-off, so.

— Jesus, man. The funeral itself – in the church, like. Packed. Loads of his kids and grandkids. An’ all sorts o’ culchies up from Mayo. Tryin’ their best to look like Dubliners, God love them. But packed now.

— I haven’t been in a packed church since I was a kid.

— Yeah, yeah – same here. An’ the speech at the end. One o’ the sons. Christ, it was brilliant. But the best bit. When they were carryin’ the coffin ou’. A lad with one o’ those things yeh put on your shoulder—

— A bag o’ cement.

— A violin. He played ‘The West’s Awake’. Made me proud, kind of – the whole thing.

— Proud o’ wha’?

— Don’t know. Just proud. An’ sad.

— You’re not goin’ to start writin’ poetry, are yeh?

— No, I’m not – fuck off.
